The healing ritual of Yoni Steaming

Yoni steaming as an ancient practice to restore health and balance your feminine cycles, ease the transition through life phases, unlock the intimate magic of your womb, and release toxic emotions such as stress, tension, and stagnation.

The magic of ritual

Ritual can be the glue that holds together your spiritual practice and your daily habits. Trying to find a balance between “needing to do” and “getting to do” is a challenge that all of us face today, but prioritizing rituals around your physical and mental health can be a huge help. The act of repetition is important for our brain chemistry. If your self-love practice is replicated week after week, you will find so much more ease in your life. It is not until we make ourselves the most important priority, that we feel into what our bodies and our spirits need the most.

Self-care in it’s purest form

It’s been a really powerful transition for me to move towards self-care practices that truly nourish my health and my spirit, and Yoni steaming is definitely one of those practices. It’s a combination of mindful meditation and establishing a connection with my womb space that makes this practice so nourishing.

Research shows that we can improve our heart health by being kinder, more gentle, and loving to ourselves, meaning we can change our physiology based on our level of self-love. I believe that this is true for our entire body, especially our female and reproductive organs. We can improve our vaginal health based on how we love and respect our bodies.

How to Yoni Steam

Yoni steaming is best when practiced in a quiet, private and serene setting. You will need some items before starting:

  • A yoga mat (unless you will be on a soft rug/carpet)

  • A blanket or towel (to wrap around your waist to keep the steam in)

  • Boiling water

  • Herbs of your choice (read here for recommended yoni steaming herbs)

  • A small bowl or pot

  • Music, incense, candles, etc. to set the mood

I usually set up my yoni steam in my living room, with music playing, incense burning and soft candle light. I start by laying out the yoga mat on the floor and leaving my blanket nearby. I then boil some water and pour it over the herbs in my small bowl. The yoni-steams that I craft (on a custom-order basis), have a lid to keep the steam/warmth inside while the herbs steep. Once I feel that the herbs are well steeped and the steam is not too hot (check by holding your wrist over the steam), I bring my yoni steam over to the yoga mat.

You can place the yoni-steam in the center of your mat and then remove your trousers/underwear. Wearing a long skirt is also an option here. You then assume child’s pose over the steaming bowl and cover your whole body with your blanket. From here you can drop into a deep meditation, connecting with the sensations in your womb space. I usually set a silent timer for 30 minutes, and allow myself to full enter the present moment.

After the steaming session is over, I usually return the herbs and water to the earth by mindfully disposing of them in my garden.

There are a lot of said benefits that one can experience from steaming regularly. Here are a few ways it can help:

It’s good to keep in mind that you should not steam your yoni while you are actively menstruating.
